Walking Onions
A Unique Hardy Perennial
Walking onions are a unique, hardy perennial onion variety that “walk” by producing small clusters of bulbs at the top of their stalks called topsets. As they grow heavier, the stalk bends to the ground.
They then take root a short distance away from the original plant where they landed, effectively “walking” across your garden over time.
Plant in fall or early spring. Bulbs or topsets should be planted about 1–2 inches deep and 6–8 inches apart.
They do best in well-draining soil in full sun… and don’t overwater. Hardy in zones 3–9, they are a low maintenance plant that makes a fun addition to your perennial garden.
You can harvest three main parts of the plant:
- Green Shoots
We recommend these in Quail eggs, egg salad of course, but use anywhere you would normally use chives or scallions.- Underground Bulbs
These have a stronger onion flavor and can be used like shallots or small onions in cooking.- Topsets
Topsets have a slightly tangy, more concentrated flavor which lends well to pickling.
